CCOP joins Global Solidarity Initiative

Deborah Katina, founder and director of Yang’at which brought fresh water to villagers in West Pokot, Kenya, will help kick off the year-long Global Solidarity Initiative at the Catholic Community of Pleasanton. She will speak Oct. 4 at the 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. youth and family liturgies at St. Elizabeth Seton Church.

Katina is the winner of Kenya’s 2008 Head of State Commendation for her work.

Father Jerry Kennedy, parochial vicar at CCOP, will underscore main points of the initiative at every Mass Oct. 3-4 at both St. Elizabeth and St. Augustine churches which make up the parish community.

The Global Solidarity Initiative, a joint effort between the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and Catholic Relief Services, is calling upon one million Catholics in the U.S. to confront global poverty, hunger, disease, conflict and other issues that affect the lives of people all over the world.

As part of its involvement in the Initiative, CCOP has reached out in solidarity with the people of Malawi. Working together with Church World Service, the community has begun to provide funds to help in the building of water wells.
