Men’s conference Oct. 31 at cathedral

Catholic men and their teenage sons are invited to a daylong conference, Oct. 31, to explore their Christian vocation and how to live it in today’s world. Oakland Bishop Salvatore Cordileone will open the conference at 8 a.m.

Five speakers will address the conference to be held in the conference center of the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland.

Dominican Father Michael Sweeney, president of the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley, will speak on the vocation of all men.
Father Tom Euteneuer, president of Human Life International, will talk on “The Church Militant, Occultism and the Culture of Death.” He will also be celebrant and homilist at the noon Mass.

The Rev. Walter Hoye, executive elder of the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in Berkeley, will address “The Cost of Discipleship.” Rev. Hoye spent 18 days in prison early this year for his anti-abortion witnessing at a clinic in Oakland.

Stephen Ruda, a captain with the Los Angeles Fire Department who was named “Firefighter of the Year” in 2005, will explore courage in everyday life. Dominican Brother Gabriel Mosher’s topic is “Every Man’s Struggle.” Brother Mosher is a student at DSPT.

The conference, which includes time for private confession, is being sponsored by the Diocese of Oakland, Ignatius Press and the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology.

Registration cost is $40 (includes lunch) before Oct. 26 and $45 at the door. There is a 50 percent discount for teenagers accompanying their fathers. Parking in the cathedral garage is $5. Registration begins at 7 a.m. The conference concludes at 4 p.m.
