Operation Rice Bowl gives social service grants

Thirteen faith-based social service groups will receive funds from Operation Rice Bowl during ceremonies Jan. 28 at the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland. Each of the grantees works in the East Bay to alleviate hunger and food insecurity.

They are: CRECE of the East Bay, Interfaith Sharing, Inc., Kmhmu Laotian Pastoral Center, St. Martin de Porres Regional School, Tri-Valley Haven, and St. Vincent de Paul Society groups at six parishes – Most Holy Rosary in Antioch, St. Catherine of Siena in Martinez, St. Edward in Newark, St. Felicitas in San Leandro, St. Francis of Assisi in Concord and St. Mark in Richmond.

Parishioners contribute to Operation Rice Bowl, a program of Catholic Relief Services, during Lent. A portion of the funds are reserved for local hunger programs while the majority of the money is forwarded to CRS for international relief.

Marc D’Silva, a program development officer with CRS, spoke at the awards event, which was co-hosted by Catholic Charities of the East Bay and CRS.
