More than $900,000 raised for Haiti in Oakland Diocese

By Voice staff

Two months after a major earthquake devastated the island nation of Haiti on Jan. 12, Catholic Relief Services had received $926,188 from people living in the Oakland Diocese. That amount is part of the $90 million given to the agency for Haiti relief from people throughout the United States.

Among the East Bay donations is $40,231 raised in two weeks by members of St. John Vianney Parish in Walnut Creek after a parishioner put up $20,000 and asked fellow parishioners to match it. More than 200 individuals and families contributed.

Fund-raising efforts for Haiti continue throughout the diocese, along with additional donations to Catholic Relief Services for its aid work in Chile, hit by an 8.8 earthquake, Feb. 27.

For a report on how CRS is spending some of its funds in Haiti, see this story.

Donations to CRS can be made in three ways:

Phone: 1-800-736-3467 between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. (EST)
