Santa Clara
University offers
special program for Catholics over 50
By Voice staff
Santa Clara University and the California Province of
the Jesuits are reaching out to Catholics ages 50 and older who want to
combine their community service to the poor with prayer and Ignatian spirituality.
Now going into its third year, “Com-panions in Ignatian Service
and Spirituality” is expanding to the East Bay in partnership with
the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. An information night will be
held May 18 at St. Mary Church in Walnut Creek from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
The program has a 10-month commitment (September — June) with two
principal components — service formation and spiritual formation.
Groups of 8-10 people meet for liturgy and enrichment. They also volunteer
with service groups and commit to daily prayer, individual monthly sessions
with a spiritual director, and two one-day retreats.
Companions in the South Bay volunteer at local Catholic Charities sites,
work with women ex-offenders, tutor special education children and distribute
bread and bagels to 10 local shelters and kitchens.
Further information is available at: www.ignatiancompanions.org.
RSVP for the May 18 event by calling Kay Mascoli at (408) 666-7506 or
