OBITUARY

Brother Cormac Murphy, FSC
 
Christian Brother Cormac Murphy, a long-time educator who served at his community’s schools in Berkeley and Moraga, died April 26 in Napa at age 94. He had been a member of the De La Salle Christian Brothers for 75 years.

Born Noel Francis Murphy in San Fran-cisco, he joined the De La Salle Christian Brothers in 1935. He graduated from St. Mary’s College in Moraga in 1939 and made his final vows in 1941. He received master’s degrees in library science from the University of Southern California in 1956 and in music from Holy Names College in 1972. He also received a Ph.D. in nutrition from Donsbach University in 1983.

In the Oakland Diocese, Brother Murphy served as a teacher and prefect at St. Mary’s High School in Berkeley in 1939-40 and 1945-46 and as archivist and librarian at St. Mary’s College in Moraga from 1968-72. He also was a teacher, librarian and prefect at schools in San Francisco, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Pasadena and Napa.

Survivors include his nieces, Jean Gal-lagher and her husband John of Brisbane; Jan Murphy of Idyllwild, Calif.; and his nephew, Robert T. Murphy of Melbourne, Australia.
The funeral Mass was held at Mont La Salle in Napa on May 3. Burial followed at Mont La Salle cemetery.
