FACE (Family Aid – Catholic Education) depends on one big night to make a difference in the lives of school children in Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
The group is celebrating its 28th annual gala and auction on April 2 with a big move — to the Blackhawk Museum in Danville.

After many years in Oakland, the event moves to the other side of the tunnel for the group’s debut event in Contra Costa County.

In the 2010-11 school year, FACE granted almost $1.5 million in tuition assistance to more than 600 students.

Grants of $1,750 each were given to about 360 elementary school children; while 279 high school students received grants of $3,050 each.

But there’s an even-bigger number in the mind of organizers: the more than 2,300 pre-qualified students who remain on the waiting list for assistance.

FACE’s mission is to provide tuition assistance to enable diverse, low-income children to attend Catholic schools has been paying dividends for more than a quarter century.

One hundred percent of FACE high school seniors graduated last year, and 98 percent attend a two- or four-year college.

Two of the FACE success stories — both college students — will speak at the event. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. April 2 with a cocktail reception and silent auction; followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. A live auction is set to begin at 8:30 p.m.

Father Jayson Landeza will be master of ceremonies, while Al Carrasco will be the auctioneer.

Bus transportation from Oakland, leaving St. Theresa Church, is available.
