Two St. Leo teams repeat playoff wins

The 2012 Girls' CYO Basketball Playoffs were held recently, concluding the basketball season for girls in the western half of the diocese. The weekend event was played at Moreau Catholic High School gym (Hayward), St. Joachim gym (Hayward) and St. Leo the Great gym (Oakland).

The results of the championship games at Moreau Catholic High School were:

Eighth Grade – St. Leo the Great, Oakland, defeated St. Joseph, Pinole, 67-57

Seventh Grade – Assumption, San Leandro, defeated St. Lawrence O'Toole, Oakland 48-21

Sixth Grade – St. Leo the Great defeated St. Joseph, Alameda, 35-23

Fifth Grade – St. Leo the Great defeated St. Lawrence O'Toole, 17-13

Fourth Grade – St. Anne, Union City, defeated St. John, San Lorenzo, 23-21

The Eighth and Fifth grade teams from St. Leo the Great were repeat winners from last years' playoffs. At the awards presentation for the Eighth Grade team, the St. Leo CYO athletic director, Olaf Pollard, announced that, while winning back-to-back basketball championships was significant, more important was that the team had a cumulative grade point average (GPA) at St. Leo the Great School of 3.9 for the year.

Forty teams were in the playoffs representing their leagues and marked the end of the Girls' CYO basketball league play in the spring. Teams in the eastern half of the diocese finished their season in March. More than 200 teams competed in the girls' CYO basketball program this past spring.
