Obituary

Sister Honora Barnacle, PBVM

Sister Honora Barnacle, a longtime teacher who served at Catholic schools around the Bay Area and the state, died on May 17 at the Presentation Motherhouse in San Francisco. The native San Franciscan, who had been a Presentation Sister for 65 years, was 82.

Sister Barnacle, whose baptismal name was Patricia, was graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from the University of San Francisco and a master's degree from Holy Names College in Oakland. Beginning her teaching ministry in 1949, she spent 25 years teaching in elementary schools in San Francisco, San Pedro, Monticello, Gilroy, Pecos, New Mexico, San Jose and Berkeley. She also taught at the former Presentation High School in Berkeley and at Presentation schools in Los Angeles and San Francisco. In addition to teaching high school level English, she also moderated student musical productions and yearbook staffs.

In recent years Sister Barnacle had been engaged in the ministry of prayer. She had resided at the Presentation Motherhouse since 1982.

The funeral Mass was held May 22 in the Presentation Motherhouse chapel. Interment followed at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma.

Memorial contributions to the Sisters of the Presentation are preferred. Contributions can be sent to Sisters of the Presentation, Development Office, 281 Masonic Ave., San Francisco 94118.
