St. Mark Parish honors St. Peter Claver
St. Mark Parish in Richmond celebrated a bilingual and multiethnic festival on the occasion of St. Peter Claver's feast day, Sept. 6. The crowd offered "Amen" to prayers for loving each other, especially those in the minority or who are different. St. Peter Claver was a Spanish Jesuit missionary who lived in the 16th and 17th centuries. Due to ministry in Africa and South America, he is known as the patron saint of slaves.

'Our hearts will hold him dear'
Parishioners of St. Joan of Arc Parish in San Ramon sent Rev. Ray Zielezienski into retirement with a joyous celebration that included the parish band's rendition of the Cal fight song, rewritten by Kathy Maier, to honor the retiring pastor, who is a Cal fan. Cal mascot Oski bear delivered the parish's gift: a trip to the Holy Land. Among those honoring Father Zielezienski was Bishop Emeritus John Cummins, who ordained him in 1981. Two dozen priests from around the diocese were among the more than 500 people from the various parishes where Father Zielezienski has ministered over the years.
