Students stopped between classes to take photos of the preparations.

Preparations are underway for the canonization Mass — I wish I had the barricade concession!
ALL: VERY REV. GEORGE MOCKEL

National shrine

Very Rev. George Mockel

Today I visited the campus of the Catholic University of America which encompasses the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception where the Holy Father will celebrate Mass tomorrow (Sept. 23) and canonize Father Serra.

I feel very blessed to be invited to be among the concelebrants at the Mass. This will be the first time in my life I have participated in a Mass of canonization.

The energy around the campus was amazing. The choir was practicing the music. The readers were practicing the proclamation of the scriptures. Chairs were being set up; the altar dusted and linens carefully being arranged.

Students with back packs were walking to and from classes bemused by all the activity and enthusiasm.

Media types were everywhere ready to interview anyone who happened to make eye contact with them!

And of course there were lots and lots of very important looking people walking here and there doing what appeared to be very important things.

(Father Mockel is vicar general of the Diocese of Oakland and pastor at Santa Maria Parish in Orinda.)

The media was everywhere, willing to interview anyone who’d make eye contact.
