Papal Visit • September 27, 2015

Pope arrives for the festival.

Memories, joy from Philadelphia

Very Rev. George Mockel

It has been an exciting, exhilarating, emotional and exhausting day!

All the waiting in lines, all the walking for what seemed to be miles upon miles, all became worth it because of the simple, but memorable experiences they engendered.

Young people meeting me on street corners asking to go to confession. Soldiers and police just wanting to talk about how moved they were by the entire experience and the courtesy of the crowds.

The young family that shared so much of their life story with me as we walked together toward the security check. I will remember and pray for their two wonderful children Grace and especially Matthew.

The looks on the faces of those who were able to be personally greeted or just receiving a wave by the Holy Father.

Meeting and visiting with friends from Oakland and beyond purely by accident or Providence? And so many thoughts and emotions surrounding the last time I was in this city for the International Eucharistic Congress many years ago.

It will all become part of a tapestry whose rich colors and textures have enriched my experiences and hopefully deepened my faith.

God bless.

(Father Mockel is vicar general of the Diocese of Oakland and pastor at Santa Maria Parish in Orinda.)
