THE DIOCESE

The Bishop's Burse
The Catholic Daughters of the Americas of the Diocese of Oakland present a check for seminarian education —the Bishop's Burse — to Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, on Jan. 31. The Court of St. Raymond hosted a fashion show and luncheon in October. All proceeds from the event go toward financial support to Oakland seminarians as they journey toward the priesthood. Representing two Courts — the Court of St. Raymond at St. Raymond Parish in Dublin and the Court of Mary, Queen of the World at St. Felicitas Parish in San Leandro are Phyllis Guild, Sylvia San Miguel, Laura Vacca, Kim Oliver, Marlene Oliver, Dreana Alaniz, Tess Chiampas, Maureen Laubacher, Nita Volker and Lorine Bakowksy. The Court of Immaculate Heart of Mary in Brentwood; Court of St. Mary Margaret in Pittsburg; Court of St. John Baptist de la Salle in Concord; and Court of Father Francisco de la Suen in Fremont also contributed to the fundraising effort.

Dispute with Knights of Malta
Pope Francis prays with Albrecht Freiherr von Boeselager, left, then-grand chancellor of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, and Fra Matthew Festing, grand master of the order, during a private audience with members of the order at the Vatican in this June 23, 2016, photo. Festing has accepted Pope Francis' request that he resign after weeks of tensions with the Vatican over the dismissal of the order's former chancellor, von Boeselager. The SMOM accepted Pope Francis' intervention in their governance, and the pope urged members to follow a path of renewal as they prepare to elect a new grand master. Fra Ludwig Hoffmann von Rumerstein will temporarily lead the chivalric order. Read more on the dispute at www.facebook.com/TheCatholicVoice.
