Kids discover talents, Bay Area at Summer Discovery

School children explore the Golden Gate Bridge as part of Summer Discovery's Bay Area Adventures.

When school ends in June, Saint Joseph Notre Dame High School in Alameda is only quiet for a short time until it is filled with hundreds of kids who attend Summer Discovery, a diverse program of enrichment camps and classes offered during June, July and August.

Last summer, more than 500 elementary and middle school students representing more than 76 schools came from all over the East Bay to engage in engineering, art, culinary arts, theater, speech and debate, games, world culture, sports clinics and academic enrichment. SJND even welcomed kids from Truckee and Beijing.

Summer Discovery Director Kathryn Hill says, "I have a great summer working with a creative group of teachers. They develop engaging classes that you don't usually see in school anymore. They make sure there is something amazing going on in every class; whether it's high-tech multimedia or old school academic enrichment. More than once I hear students say, 'I wish regular school was like this!' or 'I wish we had this class at my school!'"

What's new to Summer Discovery this year? Kids can transport themselves back in time on a virtual vacation to the Andes of Peru, build and program robots using LEGO, conduct cookie experiments and bakery science, explore the basics of fashion design and tell stories through the art of Polynesian dance. Sports clinics play to the school's traditional strengths in cross country, basketball and volleyball.

Interested in exploring the Bay Area? Get fit and venture on two wheels (Island Bicycle Adventures), tour regional colleges and universities (The Middle School Student's Guide to College), discover different science institutions (Science Exploration) and enjoy local treasures including The Mystery Spot, Henry Cowell Big Trees Redwood Forest, the Golden Gate Bridge, Angel Island and more (Bay Area Adventures).

Summer session begins June 11 and runs through Aug. 4. Enroll at SJND.org/summer.
