Activities planned around the diocese
for Fatima centennial

Parishes in the Diocese of Oakland are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, the Portuguese town where Mary appeared to three shepherd children May 13, 1917. The apparitions continued once a month until Oct. 13, 1917, and later were declared worthy of belief by the Catholic Church.

Some parishes have already announced their events (Voice, April 3, or catholicvoiceoakland.org).

Concord's St. Bonaventure Parish has several Marian events planned for the centennial.

Pastor Rev. Richard Mangini has compiled a study guide for the occasion, and the parish will celebrate with three separate Masses, reflections and movies at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. May 11, 12 and 13.

At 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. May 11, Rev. T.C. George will discuss "Mary as Mother, Jesus as Son, God as our Father — the procession of the Spiritual Life. We all belong to God," followed by Prayers of Restoration and intercessions.

At 10 a.m. May 12, the discussion will be "Where is Fatima Today? For what do we pray today?" with Prayers of Restoration and intercessions, and at 7 p.m., the documentary, "Finding Fatima," will be shown.

At 9 a.m. May 13, Father Mangini will discuss "Celebrating 100 Years. At Fatima, Mary calls Church to return to its beginnings: Pentecost to 2017." More information at stbonaventure.net.

At Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Brentwood, Rev. Erick Villa reports the parish launched the 100th anniversary with an event Jan. 6-7, and has added Masses and procession of Marian statues every 13th of the month from May to October. More information at ihmbrentwood.com

And in El Cerrito, at St. John the Baptist, the Church prays the rosary while in a procession with a statue of Our Lady around the church block. Upon returning back to the church, parishioners gather for a Mass. This celebration is held every 13th day of the month from May to October.

The rosary is prayed after every weekday Mass in front of a statue of Our Lady. More at sjtbc.us.

Our Lady of Grace Church in Castro Valley honors Mary in May with two presentations.

The Message and Meaning of Fatima will be celebrated on May 13, and on May 20 the church will consider the Immaculate Conception as the golden thread in Franciscan Marian Devotion, culminating in the establishment of the evangelization outreach of the Mission of the Immaculata established by St. Maximilian Kolbe 100 years ago. Information on an October Fatima and Lourdes Pilgrimage will be available.

Both events are from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Stack Center, May 13 and 20. RSVP for a potluck and presentation to Jay at 510-537-0806 or jay@olgcv.org. Visit http://olgcv.org.

If your parish is having a Fatima event, please send the information to apacciorini@oakdiocese.org or news@oakvoice.org.
