Founder's Day Mass
Saint Mary's College High Dance and Campus Ministry Team students wait with Rev. Carl Schlichte, OP, pastor of St. Mary Magdalen Parish, Berkeley, for the start of the school's annual Founder's Day Mass honoring St. John Baptist de La Salle on May 12 in the school auditorium. At the yearly celebration, the Lasallian Student of the Year and Lasallian Educator of the Year are named, selected by their peers. The 2017 awards went to Emma Homertgen, Class of 2017 and alumna of St. Theresa Elementary School, and Joseph Palladino, teacher of Epistemology, Social Justice and World Religions. Thirteen members of the school's faculty and staff received Years of Service plaques, including three for 30, 35 and 40 years at the school: James Lawson (SMCHS '81), Lawrence Puck (SMCHS '78) and Antone Olivier (SMCHS '70), respectively.

Permanent Deacon Nelson Gonsalves announced he was retiring from active ministry in a heartfelt note posted in the May 14 bulletin of Our Lady of Grace Parish in Castro Valley. "The 40 years of serving as deacon in the Diocese of Oakland and the previous 10 as youth minister has energized, formed and blessed me beyond measure," he wrote. "Here at OLG, I think all of you for your patience, assistance and friendship in the last six years of serving this faith filled community. I especially thank the Vincentians and their Youth and their leaders for the privilege of working side by side with them. I will miss them terribly as well as the Franciscan priests who have shown me the way to a deeper relationship with Christ."

Rev. Louis Studer, OMI was recently named the new provincial of the U.S. Province of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. A native of Wesley, Iowa, he has served in parish, vocation and formation ministries before being appointed as director of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Illinois, a position he held for 10 years. He most recently served as vicar-provincial/personnel director for the U.S. Province of the Missionary Oblates. The Missionary Oblates, which have ministered in several parishes in the Diocese of Oakland over the years, are currently serving at Oakland's Sacred Heart Parish. The community also has an administrative site in Oakland.
