Raymond and Connie Gomez

Gomez' mark
70th anniversary

Connie and Raymond Gomez celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a renewal of their nuptial vows at the Wedgewood Banquet and Wedding Center, Castro Valley, on Aug. 12 with dinner and celebration with more than 100 guests, including their best man and maid of honor, two priests, two deacons, four doctors, friends and family.

Connie and Raymond Gomez are childhood sweethearts meeting at age 14, in 1938, growing up in the East Bay Area, Raymond in Oakley and Connie in Pittsburg. Connie's parents were very strict and did not allow dating; meetings between them only took place twice weekly at the movie theater where Connie was an usher. The couple was the subject of a feature article in The Catholic Voice Feb. 4, 2013.

Raymond served with distinction in the Army during World War II in Europe, while Connie (and her father, brother and two sisters) was a Rosie-the-Riveter Welder at Shipyard No. 2, in Richmond, launching Liberty Ships.

They married in the summer of 1947 at St. John the Baptist (Fresno), settling in San Lorenzo in 1950 and becoming members of the St. John the Baptist Church. During their working years, Raymond was a production mechanic and Connie was in retail part-time. They raised four children; with three grandchildren. They have enjoyed traveling and visited 28 countries.
